I'm loving this course, and I've been thinking a lot about all of this new information we're learning about. I'm also very excited about all this new technology now at our disposal. But playing devil's advocate, this brings up an introspective question: Are we listening? Are we actually processing all of this information? Being so inundated by all these up-to-the-second news updates leaves me wondering if I've the stamina to take in all the terrible things that people do to one another in this world, including the cut-throat politicians that unconscientiously determine our safety and social wellbeing.
I think we share that fear; I would go so far as to say that the majority of people our age, as well as a startling portion of the younger crowd, don't seem to be listening or even aware of the fact that their missing out. Too often young people are sort of undermined by the older generations as if our opinions aren't valid. The unfortunate truth is that many times they may not be wrong. It seems like these days it's more likely to find someone who can tell us all what some "real housewife" has been up to than someone willing to engage in any sort of meaningful political or philosophical discourse. In my opinion this reflects a negative side-effect of the age we live in. Kids and young adults spend their time spread between digital communication devices, tweeting, texting, taking selfies and watching TV with less intellectual rapport than a box of cereal. Despite the wide array and availability of news outlets that could potentially fill someone in on any given political issue or current event, other more distracting and entertaining sites seem to be getting in the way.
